Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu was built in 15th Century. This site is 2,430 meters above sea level.  This, one of the Seven Wonders of the World is located in Cusco region of Peru, South America. It is situated above Urubamba Valley in Peru.  It was declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.

July 24, 1911, a lecturer from Yale University started his journey about exploring the rumors of ancient Inca skeletons in Peru. After a hike of 2 hours, he with his escorts came across a hut completely covered by grass. There was a boy in that hut who guided them the rest of the path. Finally after hiking for some more hours, they stumbled upon one of the wonders of the world, today know as Machu Picchu.

All this time Bingham though that he had discovered Vilcabamba, so called lost city of the Inca.  All the time he was justifying his discovery (for almost 50 years). Later in 1964, Gene Savoy, discovered Vilcabamba, the lost city that Bingham claimed to had already discovered.

Machu Picchu was constructed by Inca emperor Pachacuti. It was constructed in the celebration of defeat of a powerful rival group Chancas.

You will be surprised to know that Machu Picchu is not completed. Work on the site continued till the European conquistadors arrived in Peru in 1532. As per the buildings in Inkan city, scientist and archaeologists have assumed that there lived 1000 people in the city.80 % of the population consisted of women.  This tells us that there existed “Aqllawasi”. Aqllawasi was like a boarding school in which only beautiful and attractive young women were selected and taken to the “ House of selected women” to serve the Inca Empire.

You can enter this site through Control Gate which is a room with 3 walls and many windows. At the outskirts of the town we will see the cemetery.  There are 2 sectors in which the city is divided:
